Week of October 28 - Beginning of 2nd Quarter


MATH 

Fourth Grade Math
This week we begin Chapter 3, Multiplying by 2-digit numbers. We cover Lessons 1 - 4: Multiplying with mental math strategies, estimating products, multiplying 2-digit numbers using the standard method and area model method.  On Friday, there will be a Quiz covering Lessons 1-4 along with multiplication of 1-digit numbers.  We continue weekly Multiplication Facts timed practice drills.  This quarter, students will again receive a homework grade based on their progress in the timed multiplication drills.  

Fifth Grade Math 
We begin Chapter 3 Decimals (through the thousandths).  We will cover Lessons 1-4 which involve representing decimals in number, word and expanded form along with comparing and ordering decimals.  We will have a Quiz on Friday, covering the lessons, along with 2-digit division from Chapter 2.  We continue weekly Multiplication Facts timed practice drills. Students receive a homework grade based on their progress in the timed drills. Student Computation Tests from  last week will be used as a grade in the second quarter.

4th Grade Monday:  2:25 - 3:15 
5th Grade Wednesday: 2:25 - 3:15

SCIENCE

Grades for 4th & 5th Graders Chapter 1 Test will be included in the 2nd Quarter.  
Fourth Grade

Fourth graders begin studying Chapter 2 "Exploring Changes in Motion". New vocabulary words include: force, graviy, inertia and friction for Lessons 1. 

Fifth Grade
  

5th grade will begin studying Chapter 2 - "The Earth's Resources". New vocabulary words include: resource, renewable resource, nonrenewable resource, fossil fuel for Lesson 1.   
   

Reading, Spelling & Vocab Highlights
Reading: Storytown, Lesson 6, Night in San Juan. 
            - We use the Ask Questions comprehension strategy and practice skills 
              identifying Theme using character traits, actions and motives. 
            - Comprehension and Vocabulary Test on Friday
              

Spelling: Lesson 10 
             We will complete workbook pages and have a test on Friday. 
             The 5x each assignment is also due on Friday.
              
           
Vocabulary:  Unit 5 Vocabulary test will be Monday, October 28th. 
             Unit 6 Vocabulary Cards are due Friday.  

 Religion

We continue research for Saint Reports, writing our rough drafts and peer editing the reports. Reports will be due the week of November 4. We also continue with Chapter 3 Signs of God's presence as we discuss the many signs and symbols of the sacraments.

Week of October 21



MATH 

Fourth Grade Math
On Monday, we discuss the Guess & Check problem solving strategy and 5 Steps of Problem Solving (in student binders). Students will take a quarterly Diocesan Extended Response assessment on Tuesday showing their problem solving knowledge.  We will also practice computation skills of rounding, adding, subtracting, estimating and multiplying with a homework worksheet given on Monday.  Students take a Computation Test on Wednesday using problems similar to the Monday worksheet. Finally, we begin Chapter 3, Multiplying with 2-Digit numbers.  We hope to cover lessons 1 & 2 this week. We continue weekly Multiplication Facts timed practice drills. 

Fifth Grade Math 
We begin the week discussing the Guess & Check problem solving strategy and 5 Steps of Problem Solving (student binders). We will also practice computation skills of adding, subtracting, estimating, multiplying with a homework worksheet assigned on Monday. Students will take a quarterly Diocesan Extended Response assessment on Wednesday showing their knowledge of the problem solving steps and strategy. Students will also take a Computation Test on Thursday using problems similar to the Monday homework worksheet.  This test will be the final grade for the first quarter.  Finally, we begin Chapter 3, Decimals on Friday. We continue weekly Multiplication Facts timed practice drills.

SCIENCE


Fourth Grade


Fourth graders begin studying for Chapter 1 "Measuring Matter".  Two essay questions will be given out on Monday. These questions are to be looked up and memorized for the Chapter test.  Chapter test  - Friday, October 25th.

Fifth Grade
  

We will finish Lesson 4 in Science. A "take home" quiz will be given for homework on Monday night.  On Wednesday we will begin studying for Chapter 1 Test ("The Changing Earth") - Friday, October 25th.  Two test essay questions will be given on Wednesday, October 23rd. 
   

Reading, Spelling & Vocab Highlights
Reading: We finish up reading Frindle, on Monday just in time for the play!  
            Next, we read two issues of Time For Kids. We will be writing 
            summaries of a Chimpanzee article focusing on main idea and details. 
            We will fill out a worksheet and comprehension assignment with the 
            second issue which features an article about the Government 
            Shutdown. As we read Time For Kids, we learn about all the features 
            of informational text as we practice comprehension skills.  

Spelling: Lesson 9 
             We will complete workbook pages and have a test on Friday. 
             The 5x each assignment is also due on Friday.  
           
Vocabulary:  Unit 5 Vocabulary test will be Monday, October 28th. 
             Unit 5 Vocabulary Workbook is due Friday.  

 Religion

We will begin Saint Reports this week, using time in LRC to research  
information on our chosen Saints.  Reports will be due the following week.
