Week of January 7th

Welcome Back.  I Hope everyone enjoyed the Christmas Season.

                                                      Fifth Grade Math
I was so impressed with the fabulous graphs received from the Projects turned in on December 21st!  Student's revealed tremendous creativity and attention to detail!

This week we already reviewed Problem Solving Steps and strategies for completing Extended Response Assessments.  Students completed a Diocesan Math Extended Response Assessement on Tuesday.  We will spend the latter half of the week reviewing and practicing skills associated with Long Division with decimals.  There will be an additional Division Test early next week.

    Fourth Grade Math

Fourth graders are starting Chapter Five, Multiplying by 1 and 2 digit numbers.
We started "Minute-to-Win-It Mondays" which are timed practices of Multiplication Facts.  Students started with 0-4 Facts and will advance each week based on their accuracy and speed.  Students should continue to practice their facts using multiples tables, flashcards and online games as it will help with Chapter 5.  Keep up the good work!

Fifth Grade Reading, Spelling & Vocab
This week's reading selection, A Drop of Water, is a non-fiction story with a scientific spin. We will use a cause-effect organizer to aid comprehension along with note-taking skills.  As a fresh start to the new year, students will be creating and writing about goals they can achieve in the first quarter of 2013.  They are creating an academic goal and a personal goal which will be reflected on snowglobes and in paragraphs. A comprehension/vocabulary quiz is scheduled for Friday. Spelling Lesson 17 workbook is due on Thursday, and test is Friday.  Vocabulary Unit 8 cards are also due on Friday.

Fifth Grade Religion
We are beginning Unit 5 which deals with Prayer, Worship and the Liturgy this week.  Students will be writing their own Prayers.

Week of December 17

The fifth graders sound wonderful during practice sessions for the Music Program, which will be held Thursday evening.  If you haven't already brought your candle to school, please do so by Wednesday.

Math

The fifth graders will finishing up Chapter 4 on Data & Graphs this week. We will review on Wednesday and hold a test on Thursday. They seem to be generating many ideas for their graph project which is Due on Friday, 12/21. We will continue to review skills needed for decimal division after the Christmas holiday break.

The fourth graders completed Chapter 4 Multiplication and Division last Friday.  I was excited to see some of them using the program "Sumdog" to practice their multiplication and division skills.  This program was introduced to them by the computer teacher, Mrs. Knight.  This week, we will work on problem solving and extended responses, taking a quarterly assessment for the Diocese. This assessment will also be used as a quiz grade.

The fifth graders will be working on creating and interpreting graphs, including: pictographs, bar and double bar graphs, histograms, line plots and line graphs. A Graph Project, due Friday 12/21, will reveal their knowledge.  Students will create a line plot using head measurements  we collected in class last week. They will also create a graph of their own choice as part of the project. An open book Quiz covering Text Book pages 152 - 168 will be held on Friday. Students should review their homework from lessons 4-1 through 4-6 and their vocabulary cards. The Chapter assessment will occur on Thursday 12/20.  We will continue to review skills needed for decimal division in our spiral notebooks and students will receive a division assignment this week as well.

The fourth graders will be using their Multiplication Facts to learn Division.  They will continue practicing skip counting, creating tables of multiples and using array models to multiply and divide. Week of November 26th

Week of December 3rd

Math

To keep matters simple, Progress Reports delivered this week will reflect the work assigned prior to November 26th. Students will have plenty more assignments the remainder of this quarter. Remember the importance of homework practice.

The fifth graders are taking their Chapter 3 Division Test this week.  The students worked hard on all their "long" division homework!  I was impressed with all the dedication.  We will start Chapter 4, Data, Statistics and Graphs. The students will create line plots and a graph of their choice during this chapter.
The fourth graders are continuing the Topic of Multiplication.  Please practice facts at home using flashcards, websites, drawing multiples tables, playing dice games or other games.  This Chapter also deals with division facts, so the stronger the multiplication, the easier it is to grasp division.

In the weeks ahead, I plan to set up additional Math center activities for an early finishers or students looking to further grow and apply their math skills.

Students looking for extra help can stop in the classroom at the following times:

Reading

We are reading an Informational selection this week, The Ultimate Field Trip.  It provides  a good opportunity to discuss features we see in our textbook. We will continue work on the skills of compare and contrast, along with making generalizations.

Religion

Advent is certainly a special time of year for the Church.  We will discuss ideas on how we can prepare ourselves for Christmas.  As time permits, students will share their Saint Report with the class.
