MATH
Fourth Grade
The 4th graders got off to a great start. They are excited about learning Math facts and starting our chapter on Place Value. Please read the parent letter we sent home with them and go over the vocabulary. It will also help to have someone at home time them on their Math facts. The Math Survey is going to be a great help to us when deciding what teaching strategies to use with your child. We're looking forward to a great year. We will cover Lessons 1 - 4 this week with a short Quiz on Friday. We will enter one homework grade each week usually consisting of 25 points (5 points per day). Late homework is accepted up to 1 day after the Chapter Test.
Fifth Grade
5th graders will cover Chapter 1, Lessons 1-4 this week. This involves reviewing place value concepts and number properties (commutative, associative, distributive) as well as learning about exponents as powers of 10. There will be a short quiz on Friday. As last year, we will enter one homework grade each week usually consisting of 25 points (5 points per day). Late homework will count for 4 points instead of 5 and it will be accepted up to 1 day after each Chapter Test.
This year the Math book contains the "Homework & Practice" pages within the student edition, so students should bring that book home each night along with their Red math folder and Red spiral (if we have taken notes in class). Also, this year's Math book has several new online components. Students have a sheet with login instructions in their Red Math Folders. In addition to the Animated Math Models, Mega Math games, and the Student Edition ebook, new this year are: "On the Spot Videos" for many of the lessons; an Interactive Student Edition Book which allows students to enter answers and immediately provide feedback; and, a Personal Math Trainer found at the end of each lesson in the Interactive Book.
Multiplication Facts: We expect students to continue reinforcing multiplication facts at home. This year 5th graders should memorize the 11s and 12s. This Wednesday, we will take a 2 minute timing on facts 0-10 so students can set goals. Then each Wednesday we will take a 2 minute timed test focusing on one set of facts. The first one will be the squares (2x2, 3x3, etc.) Most fifth graders should aim for completing 30 facts per minute. You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see Math Websites Tab above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.

Religion
In Religion class we had a lesson on the "Golden Rule" by learning to be "bucket fillers" instead of "bucket dippers". It is an ongoing activity where classmates can exchange positive messages with one another all year. We also discussed the life of St. Francis of Assissi and the prayer of St. Francis. The students will discover that there are many ways they can pray throughout the coming school year.
