Week of August 25

MATH

Fourth Grade
4th graders will finish up the Skill Review Packet on Tuesday and get started in the GoMath Materials this week. We are excited to have write-in textbooks this year! Usually, we use the Student Edition (color pages and the thicker book) in class and the Practice Book (black and white slimmer book) for homework. I recommend both books be brought home to help with homework.  We will do Math Vocabulary in the spiral notebooks. This week we will work on Lessons 1 and 2 from Chapter 1: Place Value, Addition and Subtraction to One Million.  There will be a short quiz on Friday  place value and writing numbers in standard, expanded and word form. Students will receive a login sheet to the GoMath Website and a short scavenger hunt assignment on Friday.  I'm excited to get to know all of the 4th graders and I'm happy with the enthusiasm and participation so far!!!
Students are expected to practice Multiplication and Division basic facts frequently with worksheets, flashcards or websites.  You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see Math Websites Tab
above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.

In a couple weeks I will begin offering before and after school Help for Math. I will publish the times and days on this blog.

Fifth Grade
5th graders will jump into the GoMath Materials this week.  This week we will cover Lessons 1 - 3 Place Value, Patterns and Properties in Chapter 1: Place Value, Multiplication and Expressions.  There will be a short Quiz on Friday. We will review procedures for logging on to the Online GoMath Website and Tools. There will be a scavenger hunt assignment on Friday.

In a couple weeks I will begin offering before and after school Help for Math. I will publish the times and days on this blog.

Students should practice multiplication facts frequently with worksheets, flashcards or websites.  You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com (website listed in Tab above).

SCIENCE

Fourth Grade

4th graders have begun science class learning the Scientific Methods for Science Inquiry. After Stating the Problem and writing a Hypothesis, they will make boats out of clay, float their boats, see how many marbles it takes to sink it, and collect data in their chart.  They will have tested their hypothesis and reached a conclusion.

We will then begin working on Physical Science. We will learn what Mass and Matter are, and memorize the definitions.  We will then explore the properties of liquids and solids.

Fifth Grade

5th graders will begin exploring the relative sizes of the different layers of the earth.  Using different colors of clay and the metric system, they will make models of the earth's layers. They will also be learning about the outer layers.
