Week of October 6

GOMATH Online Access:  To use the website we should continue to share the logins for numbers 1 - 4 ( instead of individual student numbers).

MATH

Fourth Grade
4th graders practiced 4 ways to multiply by a one-digit number last week! They will be responsible for mastering one method and being able to use their notes to try another method for the Pumpkin Project which is due Wednesday.
There will be a "Quick Quiz" on Friday covering Estimating Products, Multiplying 2 digits by 1 digit, 3 digits by 1 digit and 4 digits by one digit as we wrap up Chapter 2.  The Test will most likely occur on Thursday, October 16.
Use Carmen San Diego Math Models, Skills 5-12, to practice skills in Chapter 2. Remember we need to share logins 1-4 at this time.

Multiplication Facts: Practice facts for 2s, 5s, and squares (3x3, 4x4, and so on) this week. You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see Math Websites Tab above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.

Fifth Grade
5th graders will wrap up with Chapter 2, Divide Whole Numbers by covering Lessons 7 - 9. We reviewed a method called Partial Product Division last week which was briefly introduced in 4th grade.  We will continue to look into that method as well as master the standard method. Partial Quotients helps us decompose numbers for advanced math topics, including use of the distributive property and may alleviate frustration of adjusting the quotient, by using mental math to multiply by 10s, 100s and 1000s.  Students will be responsible for mastering only one method of long division, however, they need to understand the meaning of "partial quotient" (part of the quotient that must be added up to get to the final quotient).  There will be a Quick Quiz on Estimating, 2-digit division, and interpreting Remainders on Wednesday.  The Pumpkin Expression Project they received on September 30 is due Wednesday October 8. Students received a page showing several examples with answers of word problems they can use as an aid in creating their own problem. Use Carmen San Diego Math Models, Skills 8-14, to help prepare for the Chapter 2 test which most likely occur on Wednesday, October 15.

Multiplication Facts: Continue practicing multiplication facts this week will begin on the 2s, 5s and memorizing the squares (3x3, 4x4, and so on).  Memorizing the squares early on will help as we progress. You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see Math Websites Tab above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.

Fifth Grade

5th graders will begin learning how weathering, erosion, and deposition change the earth.

Students have been bringing in pictures of the above mentioned for extra credit.  We will be making a collage of each.
