Week of September 28

MATH

Fourth Grade

This week we will be having our final test for Chapter 1. Monday we will go over any questions your students may have and the test will be on Tuesday. Since the test is rather long, we may need two days to finish it up. In chapter 2, we will begin multiplication of up to the thousands place by a 1-digit number. Remind your students to have their spirals as we will be using them for notes and examples. I know that some of you were having trouble doing the scavenger hunt and I am aware that there were a few wrong instructions on the hand out. There is no 1.10 for 4th grade and the Personal Math Trainer was the red button not the purple one. Hopefully we can iron out all the kinks because the on-line library is definitely worth the effort.  Use the link from "Math Website Tab" above as it contains some TroubleShooting Tips as well.

Fifth Grade

The Online Scavenger Hunt is Due on Monday 9/28.  This assignment is about getting students familiar with the online components available to them for each lesson.  Please use the link from the "Math Website Tab" above and you will also find some troubleshooting tips there as well.  A Properties & Multiplication packet that will be graded is Due on Wednesday 9/30. To practice the all important skill of creating and solving numeric expressions using the Order of Operations, students will be given a Pumpkin "Expression" Project which will be Due Monday, 10/7.  We begin Chapter 2 Division and will have a quiz on Friday covering lessons 1, 2 and 4 which review division by 1-digit divisors and estimating with compatible numbers. Next week is division by 2-digit divisors.

4th & 5th Grade Multiplication Facts
This week students are required to write the 3's five times each to review for Wednesday's 2 minute timing of the THREEs. Most fourth graders should aim for completing 25 facts per minute and fifth graders should aim for completing 30 facts per minute. You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see "Math Websites Tab" above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.

Religion

Last week’s visit by Pope Francis to the United States was an historic as well as seminal event. The dinner where he served the homeless was a call to end poverty and hunger in the world. This act of humility was a perfect illustration of our chapter on stewardship of God’s creation and how we, as Catholics, can live this out in our world. This week’s Mass Readings are: Rev.12:7-12, John1:47-51, and Psalm138:1-2. We will be reading about St Gabriel and St. Raphael.  In Chapter 2 we will be reading the story of ‘Martha and Mary’ and the ‘Samaritan Woman’.  We will also explore ways we can seek God and why it should be an important part of our day.

Religion

This coming week we will continue to explore ways in which we, as individuals, can be stewards of God’s creation. We will also see a video on the purpose of Pope Francis’ visit to the United States, which actually ties in to what we have been discussing.  The 5th Grade as a whole will begin a “community building” activity where we will be addressing the question, “How can I contribute to our 5th Grade community at St. Joe’s?”  The purpose of this unit is to emphasize our individual roles as contributing members of a safe, warm, loving, and happy environment  here  at school.
