MATH
Fourth Grade
This coming week we will be finishing up
Chapter 1. Our goal is to be able to compare, order, round add and subtract
multi-digit whole numbers. We will be learning how to model as well as to
master the standard algorithms. On Wednesday we will have our 2’s facts timed
test. Please make sure your student has a spiral and folder for math as we will
be using our notes and handouts for quizzes and tests.
Fifth Grade
This week we
will skip lessons 8-9 and focus on Lessons 10 - 12, writing and evaluating
numerical expressions using the order of operations (PEMDAS). Students will
have notes in their folders to help with this skill. We will have the Chapter
1 Test on Friday, rather than carry it over into next week's IOWA testing.
We will revisit Chapter 1 Lessons 8-9 dealing with problem solving skills
after the test.
Multiplication Facts:
This week students are required to write the 2's five times each to review for
Wednesday's 2 minute timing of the TWOs. Most fifth graders should aim for
completing 30 facts per minute. You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see Math Websites
Tab above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.
4th & 5th Graders
Reminder: This year the Math book contains the "Practice &
Homework" pages within the student edition, so students should bring that
book home each night along with their Red math folder and Red spiral (if we
have taken notes in class). Also, this year's Math book has several new online
components. Students have a sheet with login instructions in their Red
Math Folders. In addition to the Animated Math Models, Mega
Math games, and the Student Edition ebook, new this year are:
"On the Spot Videos" for many of the lessons; an Interactive
Student Edition Book which allows students to enter answers and
immediately provide feedback; and, a Personal Math Trainer found
at the end of each lesson in the Interactive Book.
Math Help/Club Hours begin this week
After School (students need a "travel note")
4th Graders only: Tue. 2:20pm - 3:15pm
5th Graders only: Wed. 2:20pm - 3:15pm
SCIENCE
Fourth Grade
4th graders are beginning Lesson 1. They will be learning that
matter has mass and volume, that it has physical properties, and that it can be
combined into mixtures and solutions. First quiz on Lesson 1 will be
either Wednesday or Thursday.
Fifth Grade
5th graders are exploring evidence that continents have moved
over time, how the theory of plate tectonics explains this evidence, and how
the movement of the earth's plates causes earthquakes and volcanic
eruptions.

Religion
This coming week our Mass
theme is Our Lady of Sorrows. We will be reading John 19 and discussing the
spiritual martyrdom of Mary. In our text we will be learning about what we can
do to be a steward of God’s creation. We will make the connection with the
Pope’s visit to America this month and his purpose in coming. On Friday we will
have a quiz on Chapter 1 and your student will be bringing home a Faith and
Family page for you to review this week’s concept of
stewardship.
