Week of January 11

MATH

Fourth Grade

This is our last week before the next report card, so please be sure all assignments are current.  Since Chapter 5 was a short one, we will have our test beginning on Thursday, Jan. 14. Chapter 5 was basically about factors and multiples and it was designed to give them a good foundation for our next chapter on Fractions.  Thank you for all your help in memorizing the multiplication and basic division facts.

Fifth Grade

5th graders will take a 2nd quarter Computation Skills Test on Wednesday which is just like the Review Sheet given for homework on Friday.  No word problems!  We will begin reviewing 4th grade Fraction Skills as we get reading to start Chapter 6 in our 2nd Volume of the Student Edition.

The Decimal Restaurant/Store project explained before break is due on Friday, January 15.  I have sample projects from last year students can view to get ideas.  I have Large Construction Paper available so students do not need to buy poster board.

4th & 5th Grade Multiplication Facts
Most fourth graders should aim for completing 25 facts per minute and fifth graders should aim for completing 30 facts per minute. You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see "Math Websites Tab" above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.

5th graders have begun their weather observations. They had some great weather to observe for Friday and Saturday, some precipitation, wind and a drop in temperature!! Weather projects are due on January 22, 2016. (see rubric).

5th graders are learning about the three states of water and the way these states relate to one another on the search in the water cycle.  (Quiz on Lesson 1 on Tuesday).  Students will make a model of the earth and its axis using a ball and pencil, shine a flashlight on the ball and observe what happens to the amount of light each hemisphere receives as the model of the earth is moved in a simulated orbit.
