Week of September 8th


MATH 

Fourth Grade 
4th graders will finish Chapter 1, with Lessons 6-8 covering Addition, Subtraction and Problem Solving. We will complete a review of skills which will provide excellent practice for our first test.  The Chapter 1 Test will be on Friday, September 12th.  Since the GoMath Tests are all word problems, we may need to finish complete the test on Monday, September 15th.  Use your online login to use the Carmen San Diego Math Models, Skills 1 - 4, to help prepare for the test. 

We will also begin weekly Math Facts exercises this week.  Students will receive one grade per quarter based on their completion or improvement with Math Facts. You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see Math Websites Tab above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.

Before and After school Math Help/Club begins this week. See schedule below.  

Fifth Grade  

5th graders will complete Chapter 1, Lessons 7 - 12 this week with Lessons on 1 digit multiplication, division, word problems, creating numerical expressions and using order of operations to solve expressions.  There will be a Quiz on Friday, and a Review Assignment in preparation for the Chapter 1 Test (planned for Tuesday, September 16th).  Use your online login to check out the Carmen San Diego Math Models, Skills 1 - 5, to help prepare for the test.

5th Graders only:  Wed.  2:20pm - 3:15pm
Before School (students need a "Mrs. Hall permission note")
Both 4th and 5th Graders:
 Wednesday and Fridays from 7:15am - 7:45am 



SCIENCE 

Fourth Grade 

4th graders will begin Lesson 1 in Physical Science. They will be learning about mass, matter, volume, physical properties, mixtures and solutions. The first quiz should be on Thursday, 9-11-14   

  
Fifth Grade 

5th graders have begun presenting their dioramas.  They are very creative, GREAT JOB!! 5th graders will be working on an activity to better understand the theory of continental drift and begin Lesson 3.  

Reading, Spelling & Vocab Highlights
             
Reading: StoryTown Lesson 4 "The Daring Nellie Bly" 
             Genre: Biography.  
             We cover the comprehension skills of Character Motives, Rereading, 
             and Plot: Conflict and Resolution. 
             Test on Friday: Storytown Comprehension and Vocabulary
          
Spelling (Purple Spelling Practice Book): Lesson 3 
             Workbooks are due on Thursday for Mrs. Hall & Mrs. Stillo.
             The Lesson 2 Test and 5x each assignment and optional Pretest 
                   are due on Friday.

                   practice and games using our current word list. 

Vocabulary (Blue Workbook):                     
            Unit 1 Test will be Monday, Sep. 8th
            Unit 2 Index Cards are due Friday, Sep. 12th.

Religion

We will discuss Bullying and Strategies to deal with bullies. Students will write essays explaining the meaning of bullying and types of bullying.  If time, we will begin Chapter 1, Revelation, using our Religion workbooks.

Other Fifth Grade News

If your child is interested in participating in Choir for Tuesday Masses, the first official practice is Monday at 12:15. Students go to lunch about 5 minutes early, then attend practice during the remainder of lunch and recess.
