Week of October 26

MATH 

Fourth Grade 


 It's hard to believe we are already in the last week of the 1st quarter. This week we are beginning Chapter 3: Multiplication by two-digit numbers using all the strategies learned in Chapter 2.  We are also going to be journaling more in our spiral notebooks about problem solving strategies. Encourage your student to be more diligent about using his/her notes for tests.  We are finishing our Chapter 2 test on Monday and having our 7's fact test by the end of the week. The 7's are due in our spirals by Wednesday. 

Fifth Grade  



This week we will catch up with our Number Personalities, continue with Chapter 3 focusing on adding decimals and estimating sums, review vocabulary and practice extended responses for a Diocesan Assessment on Friday.  On Friday, we will also have a vocabulary quiz covering Chapters 1 - 3.  The facts for the 8s are due on Wednesday this week, but we will have the timed practice next week. 

4th & 5th Grade Multiplication Facts 
This week we will test on the SEVENS! Most fourth graders should aim for completing 25 facts per minute and fifth graders should aim for completing 30 facts per minute. You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see "Math Websites Tab" above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.

SCIENCE 


Fourth Grade 


4th graders will be reviewing for the Chapter 1 Test on Thursday, October 29th.

Please keep a look out for the two essay questions from the Chapter 1 test.  The children will write the two questions on their Study Guide, (which will be given to them on Tuesday) and they are to answer the question and memorize the answer for the test.  I will be giving them other study aids.  
  


Fifth Grade 

5th graders will begin Lesson 4 and learn how rocks change form and what fossils found in rock layers tell about how the earth has changed.  There should be a quiz on Lesson 4 on Friday.

Reading, Spelling & Vocab Highlights
              
Reading:  Secret Ingrediant (Theme 2, Lesson 10)
               Genre: Reader's Theatre (Realistic Fiction)
               Comprehension Skills: Review of Finding Theme, Character Motives,
                         Text Structure: Sequencing, Compare & Contrast

               We will also begin using Time For Kids this week and focus on
               important features of Informational Text as well as supporting
               answers on quizzes by underlining evidence.

Religion

This week your students will choose a saint for their “Saint Report s” and be given a rubric to guide them in their research.  The project will be due the second week of November.  Any books on the lives of the saints or materials you would like to share for our research would be greatly appreciated. We will be completing a Review of Unit 1 and having a test on Chapter 3 on Thursday.  It would be a good idea to reread the chapter and review any new terms we have discussed.

MATH 

Fourth Grade 

This week we are reviewing for our Chapter 2 test which will be on Thursday and Friday.  On Tuesday we will have a basic computation test for the first quarter.  Students will be allowed to use their notes for both tests.  I will send home “How to Study” worksheets that will be worth two points if completed and signed.  I was really pleased with the Pumpkin Projects and how far the classes have come in all multiplication strategies.

Fifth Grade  

Last week, students were able to solve the creative Expression problems developed by other students. This week we begin working with Decimals in Chapter 3. We will cover lessons 1 - 4 and have a short quiz on Friday.

5th graders will continue in Lesson 3, learning about weathering, erosion and deposition.  There will be a quiz on Wednesday, for Lesson 3.

Religion

This week we are continuing to explore signs of God’s presence in both the Old and New Testaments. Last the fifth grade composed Rosary prayer intentions which will be read aloud Friday, October 23 in church.  We will also be reading about Moses and the “burning bush” and reviewing  a little about the life of Moses and how God manifested His presence to him from his birth until his death.
