Week of October 5

MATH

Fourth Grade

We are off to a good start in one-digit multiplication and have already learned two ways to multiply along with some helpful strategies. This week we will be exploring area models and estimating. Your student will be able to decompose numbers easily now that we have finished our chapter on place value. It’s important to have a solid foundation in “number sense” before moving to the standard algorithm. Ask your student about the two ways we have learned to multiply so far. We will have a short quiz on Friday.

Fifth Grade

The Pumpkin "Expression" Project is Due on Wednesday, 10/7.  We will wrap up Chapter 2 Division this week focusing on dividing with 2-digit divisors. I am impressed how well students remembered long division with 1-digit divisors from last year. I am encouraging them to solve problems in their spirals turned sideways so they can use the notebook paper columns to keep the numbers lined up! We will have a review quiz on Friday covering estimating, interpreting remainders and division with 2-digit divisors.  The test will be the following week on Tuesday and Wednesday after we review.

4th & 5th Grade Multiplication Facts
This week students are required to write the 4 multiplication facts five times each to review for Wednesday's 2 minute timing of the FOURs. TIP: If you forget a fact, use your knowledge of the 2s, then double your product!  Since 2 x 4 = 8, you will double 8 and realize that 4 x 4 = 16. Most fourth graders should aim for completing 25 facts per minute and fifth graders should aim for completing 30 facts per minute. You can print your own worksheets from Math-drills.com, play online games (see "Math Websites Tab" above), or borrow some "Holey Cards" from Mrs. Hall.
